Champai Soren is a senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and has been a legislator from the Seraikela Assembly constituency since 1991. He is known for his long-standing loyalty to the JMM and has played a significant role in the movement for the creation of the state of Jharkhand. Born in November 1956, Champai Soren is the son of a farmer and is not related to Hemant Soren's family.
Following the arrest of Hemant Soren by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on charges of money laundering, Hemant resigned as Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Subsequently, the ruling JMM-led coalition elected Champai Soren as their new legislative party leader, and he took the oath as the new Chief Minister on February 2, 2024 (India Today) (India Today) (Telegraph India) (Hindustan Times).
Champai Soren's tenure began amid political turbulence, as the coalition moved its 43 MLAs out of the state to avoid potential destabilization efforts by the opposition (India Today) (Telegraph India).
