How does DigiLocker work? In which offices are the documents stored in it valid? What is the latest update of DigiLocker?

Hello, We are All Vision India, Hope you are well

DigiLocker is a secure cloud-based platform provided by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. It functions as a digital locker where Indian citizens can store, share, and verify their important documents and certificates. Here's how it works:

How DigiLocker Works:

  1. Sign-up and Account Creation: Users need to sign up for a DigiLocker account using their Aadhaar number or mobile number. This involves a multi-factor authentication process using a One-Time Password (OTP) for security.
  2. Linking Aadhaar: It is recommended to link your Aadhaar number to your DigiLocker account. This allows you to easily fetch and store documents issued by various government agencies that are integrated with DigiLocker.
  3. Fetching Documents: Once logged in, users can 'fetch' digital documents issued by various government departments, educational institutions, banks, and other organizations that are part of the DigiLocker ecosystem. By selecting the issuing agency and providing necessary details like roll number, year of passing, etc., the digital document is directly pulled into the user's DigiLocker account.
  4. Uploaded Documents: Besides fetching documents, users can also upload their own scanned copies of documents into the 'DigiLocker Drive'. This provides 1GB of free cloud storage space. However, these uploaded documents are primarily for the user's record-keeping and are not considered legally valid as e-documents unless digitally signed using the e-Sign facility.
  5. Issued Documents Section: This section contains the authentic digital documents fetched directly from the issuing agencies. These documents are legally recognized as equivalent to the original physical documents as per Rule 9A of the Information Technology (Preservation and Retention of Information by Intermediaries providing Digital Locker facilities) Rules, 2016.
  6. Sharing Documents: Users can easily share the e-documents stored in their 'Issued Documents' section with various agencies or individuals by sharing a link. This ensures secure and authentic document sharing with the consent of the citizen.
  7. Verification: DigiLocker also provides a mechanism for government agencies and other entities to verify the authenticity of the e-documents shared by users, ensuring a seamless and trustworthy process.

Offices Where DigiLocker Documents are Valid:

The documents stored in the 'Issued Documents' section of DigiLocker are legally valid and accepted in various government and private offices across India. Several government bodies and departments have issued circulars and notifications regarding the acceptance of digital documents from DigiLocker. Some key examples include:

  • Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH): Driving Licenses (DL) and Vehicle Registration Certificates (RC) presented through DigiLocker are valid.
  • Indian Railways: Digital Aadhaar and Driving License from DigiLocker are accepted as proof of identity for train journeys.
  • Ministry of Civil Aviation (Bureau of Civil Aviation Security): Photo ID documents from DigiLocker are accepted at airports.
  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) & Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI): Officially Valid Documents (OVDs) from DigiLocker are accepted for Know Your Customer (KYC) processes.
  • Ministry of Education (formerly MHRD): DigiLocker is designated as the National Academic Depository (NAD), making academic awards like mark sheets and certificates valid when accessed through it.
  • Various State Transport Departments: Many state transport departments have issued notifications for the acceptance of DL and RC presented via DigiLocker.
  • Passport Seva: Certain documents like Aadhaar Card, Driving License, Voter ID, and others can be shared from DigiLocker during the passport application process.

It's important to note that only the documents listed under the 'Issued Documents' section are considered valid. Scanned copies or photographs uploaded by the user in the 'Uploaded Documents' section are for personal storage and may not be accepted as valid proof.

Latest Update of DigiLocker:

As of May 12, 2025, the latest version of the DigiLocker Android application available on Aptoide is 9.0.3, released on April 29, 2025. This update includes performance enhancements and minor bug fixes.

Additionally, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is expected to announce the Class 10 and 12 results for 2025 on DigiLocker today, May 12, 2025. Students who appeared for the exams can access their results on the official DigiLocker CBSE portal.
