The Char Dham (Four Abodes): This is a set of four highly revered pilgrimage sites believed to grant salvation (moksha). There are two circuits:

  • Himalayan Chota Char Dham (Small Four Abodes): Located in the majestic Himalayas of Uttarakhand, these sites are:

    • Badrinath: Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this temple is set against the backdrop of the Neelkanth peak.
    • Kedarnath: A significant shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, known for its challenging trek and stunning mountainous surroundings.
    • Gangotri: The origin of the holy River Ganga, dedicated to Goddess Ganga.
    • Yamunotri: The source of the River Yamuna, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna.
  • All-India Char Dham (Four Great Abodes): These are geographically spread across India:

    • Badrinath (Uttarakhand) - North
    • Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu) - South, known for the Ramanathaswamy Temple (one of the 12 Jyotirlingas).
    • Dwarka (Gujarat) - West, associated with Lord Krishna.

The Twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva: These are twelve sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, where Shiva appeared as a fiery column of light (Jyotirlinga). Some prominent ones include:

  • Kashi Vishwanath Temple (Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh): One of the most renowned and ancient Jyotirlingas.
